WHAT:
Leather is a natural material renowned for its strength, flexibility and resilience. The durability of leather ensures it can last for years, making it a valuable investment for those seeking long-lasting quality.
WHY:
We’re an official Leather Working Group (LWG) member and purchase 100% of our leathers from LWG-certified suppliers. Our leather products support responsible manufacturing via the Leather Working Group. We partnered with LWG in 2019 to reduce the environmental impact of leather production and work with our suppliers to source leather from LWG-rated tanneries. These tanneries must adhere to a strict protocol, focusing on energy and water usage, waste management, the control of chemicals and more.
Tanneries repurpose millions of animal hides, stopping them from being discarded into landfills or burned. Leather products also last longer when compared to “vegan leather ” alternatives, which are often made from plastics and petrochemicals. Extending the use of a leather product by just nine months can significantly reduce its CO2 footprint by 30%, according to the Waste and Resources Action Programme.
OUR SOURCING COMMITMENT:
We ban the use of all exotic animal skins and any endangered species that appear on the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species or the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Specifies.
VEGETABLE TANNED LEATHER:
When it comes to treating leather, there are several methods, but none as eco-friendly as vegetable tanning.
This method is preferred over the use of chrome tanning, which uses toxic metals that can contaminate water disposal systems.
Instead, vegetable tanning relies on plant-based tannins that are safe for the environment. While vegetable tanning does require a significant amount of water, the tannins used have no negative impact on wastewater and do not cause any flow-on effects.
Vegetable tanned leather is known for its rich, natural hues and unique texture that cannot be replicated with other methods. By choosing this method, you're not only getting a high-quality product, but also supporting sustainable practices that prioritise the health of our planet.
WHERE WE ARE HEADING:
Our ultimate objective is to achieve complete transparency in our leather production process, from the farm to the finished product. By 2025, we aim to ensure that all newly manufactured black, tan, and chocolate leathers are vegetable tanned.
