Our ultimate goal is to eventually eliminate all non-biobased components from our products.
To achieve this, it's crucial for us to understand what’s in our shoes and how they’re sourced.
Biobased products are composed of biological materials, partially or in whole. This means the material is derived from living matter – including plant, animal, or marine materials.
Biobased materials are often made from residual streams from agriculture, horticulture, and forestry, meaning new materials don’t need to be grown to make them. By using biobased materials, we reduce our dependency on non-renewable resources like fossil fuels.
In nature, there is no waste. Our vision is to craft a shoe made entirely of responsibly-sourced biobased products, with the hope than the shoe can decompose naturally at the end of its lifecycle.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) provides leadership on food, agriculture, natural resources, rural development and nutrition based on public policy. The USDA Certified Biobased Product label is designed to provide information to consumers about the biobased content of the product.
If a product has been certified by the USDA, the product has been scientifically tested and will be labelled with the percentage of renewable, biological ingredients it contains.
You can find USDA-certified materials across our range, including our B.Plantfoam™ footbed, MIRUM® upper material, and PLIANT™ outsole.
