Kicks To Make Change: Hornbill Lakkari Sneaker
6/2/2021
We're all about making a difference, and to continue our long-standing partnership with Children’s Ground, we’re here to do just that.
After donating $37,250 (and counting!) from our last collaboration, we thought it was about time to launch another. That's where Aboriginal contemporary artist, Lakkari Pitt comes in.
Together we created the ‘Hornbill Lakkari’ sneaker! A limited-edition style featuring the artist's pastel-coloured artwork and designed to give back to communities surrounding Alice Springs, Darwin and West Arnhem Land.
$50 for every sneaker sold will be donated to empowering our First Nations children and families by helping them live free from economic poverty and inequality.
If you don’t know already, Children’s Ground are the absolute legends who support our First Nations peoples. Guided by local Elders, the organisation builds on the social, cultural, and economic capital of each community they work in to create places of safety and inclusion.
“Our goal is that all our children and families have the same opportunities that every other child or person their age in Australia has. That they feel they belong, have confidence in their identity and are connected and grounded through language and culture to their country,” says Angee Ross, Children’s Ground Senior Executive
As a proud Gamilaroi Ularoi/Yuwaalaraay yinarr (woman), Lakkari’s art is a take on the knowledge that her Elders passed down through generations.
“My favourite thing to do is to listen to stories from my Elders and the significant people in my life about culture, language, family traditions and our kinship systems. I feel a responsibility to pass down their knowledge through both my art and storytelling.”
The young artist’s art explores the movement, essence and stories of Country.
“I am gaining a deeper understanding of my culture, which is really hard to put into words. The English language will never be able to capture the deep connection Aboriginal people have with their culture,” details Lakkari.
Join us on our journey to empower our First Nations peoples. Help us support this incredible cause, and donate what you can – every little bit counts.
